The FoCo Roller Derby officiating crew is operated and staffed completely by volunteers. Officials support the game of roller derby by learning and applying the rules during scrimmages and games (aka bouts)! The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has two types of officials who work towards providing a fair, fun & safe atmosphere to play the game of Flat Track Roller Derby.
Types of Officials
Non-Skating Official (NSO)
Non-skating officials (aka NSOs) work off skates. NSOs are the backbone of the officiating crew and assist the skating officials during a game. NSO positions include:
- Jam Timer
- Score Keepers & Scoreboard Operator
- Penalty Box Manager & Penalty Timers
- Penalty Tracker & Lineup Tracker
Skating Official (Referee)
Roller derby skating officials are no different than any you watch on TV during a basketball or football game, except for the wheels on their feet! Skating officials apply the rules of Flat Track Roller Derby, and unlike most sports, roller derby referees issue penalties during active gameplay.
- Quad Roller Skates or Inline Skates
- Protective Padding: wrist guards, elbow pads, and high-quality knee pads
- Whistle: WFTDA prefers the Fox 40 Classic
- Reusable water bottle
You can use rental skates at no charge during basic skating skills training, but they are not ideal. We recommend you purchase your own quad skates before you start. Skate packages start from $150 on upwards, most members budget $300 - $500. Your performance and progress will be greatly affected by the equipment selected, so if you’re not sure what to buy, ask us first!!
We are also lucky to have Skate Ratz, a specialty skate shop located nearby (343 E 4th St, Loveland, CO 80537 or Sk8ratz.com.) They are knowledgeable and able to customize your derby gear to suit your needs and our requirements.
All WFTDA Skating Officials are required to purchase secondary insurance (WFTDA Insurance) at the cost of $75 per year. This secondary insurance is a supplement to your own primary insurance and covers roller derby practice and bouts only. After one year of volunteer service as a FoCo Roller Derby official, the league may cover your WFTDA insurance cost.
Officials must attend a minimum of 1 Adult Scrimmage per month to be voting league members. All other practices are optional. We also occasionally have WFTDA Rules Review gatherings that will be announced as they are planned. (January - November)
